Duke athletic teams are known as the Blue Devils and are part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Currently, the school has about 674 athletes with several fields and stadiums available to all students. The top sports tend to be Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse. For those who don’t wish to take part in varsity, Duke also offers 37 sports clubs and several intramural teams.

Students, and even the public, can also choose to visit Duke Forest, which takes up a majority of the school’s acreage. In addition to hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, the school uses the forest for research, including animal behavior and ecosystem study. Also within the forest is the Lemur Center, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is the largest sanctuary for 25 different species of galagos, lemurs, and lorises.

A large number of men and women take part in the over 400 clubs and organizations available on campus, including fraternities, sororities, student government, special interest, service, cultural, and literary. The Duke University Union is in charge of programming organization, which mainly deals with the social to recreational side of the campus. The Multicultural Center is the hub for cultural groups such as the Asians Students Association, Black Student Alliance, Jewish Life at Duke, Native American Student Coalition, Languages Dorm, and more.

Other popular clubs include Hoof ‘n’ Horn for theater, a Capella groups, bands, and the mock trial team. For literary students, The Chronicle is the daily newspaper that has been published regularly since 1905 and has a readership of over 70,000 people. For media, Cable 13 is the student run television station and WXDU-FM is the noncommercial radio station run by both students and volunteers.

Duke’s campus itself is known as “the Gothic Wonderland,” due to the architecture found on West Campus. The library is one of the top research systems in the United States and includes over six buildings dedicated to their files. The art collection can be found at Nasher Museum of Art which currently contains over 13,000 pieces. Services available on campus include the hospital, academic/career counseling, placement, and employment.

Almost all freshman, sophomores, and juniors are required to live on campus, with 85% of the total school staying in one of the dorms either in East, West, or Central Campus. In all, the housing units have a capacity of 5699.
