All freshmen are required to live on campus when accepted to Brown, which includes enough room for 5196 students. The residence halls are all located in scenic areas and courtyards.

The school is home to dozens of traditions, including the Campus Dance, which is a university wide dance held during commencement weekend. Also popular is the Gala, a school wide formal with themes such as Casablanca, Grecian, or Moulin Rouge and every Halloween, the University Orchestra plays death themed music followed by Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.

Students can choose to participate in the over 300 student run organizations, featuring political, cultural, ethnic, religious, interest, and event groups. For musically inclined students, The Brown Band or Ballroom Dance are suggested. For students who love the outdoors, there is the Brown Outing Club. There are also several publications including the Brown Daily Herald and Brown Noser and the media group, Brown TV. Fraternities, sororities, and public service groups are also available on campus.

Brown University is part of the Ivy Group athletic conference, with 919 Brown Bears. Although the school boasts the nation’s broadest number of varsity teams, Football, Basketball, and Rowing are the most popular. Club and intramural sports, fitness centers, and 64 P.E. classes are also available to students (including martial arts, yoga, and dance).

The University Library System is comprised of 6 libraries: John D. Rockefeller Jr, Sciences, John Hay, John Carter Brown, Orwig Music, and Art Slide. Together, they house nearly 7 million items, which include bound volumes, maps, sheet music, manuscripts, internet materials, periodicals, and more. Academic and career counseling, placement services, and employment services are also available to students and graduates.

Brown is located in the heart of Providence, allowing students to easily visit the city, featuring plenty of history, museums, galleries, shops, parks, and restaurants. The school is also intertwined with the surrounding area offering many programs for public service, community, and welfare.
