In 1969, Brown University removed general education requirements, allowing students to craft their own journey with the help of an advising network. Popular concentrations include Computer Science, Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, Applied Mathematics, General, Biology/Biological Sciences, General, Engineering, and General. Every year 2,000 courses are offered under over 40 departments as well as available classes at the Rhode Island School of Design or courses of their own creation supervised by faculty members.

Concentrations must be declared by the fourth semester before classes can be chosen Junior year. Although there are no requirements for majors, the school does require students to take two writing courses. All English, Comparative Literature, and Literary Arts courses can fulfill this need.
