A liberal arts college, the most popular majors at Swarthmore are Economics, General, Computer and Information Sciences, General, Engineering, General, Mathematics, General, Biology/Biological Sciences, and General. As part of the Tri-College Consortium and the Quaker Consortium, students also have the opportunity to take courses at Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Some students can choose to take part in the College’s Honors program, which is based off Oxford’s. While in Honors, participants will work closely with professors, take part in independent study, and be tested in an examination with outside scholars after two years.

After being accepted to Swarthmore, each student will receive an academic adviser, which will go over long-term goals, study abroad options, new fields, graduate study, and previous academic performance. This will help both the student and adviser find the best courses for the four years at the college. After four semesters, students must declare their major and are assigned a second adviser to mentor them through their field.

Freshman are encouraged to take part in first year seminars. Made up of 12 students, these classes focus on critical reading, analytical thinking, academic presentation, research, and more. Many can also count as prerequisites for majors.
