Dr. Sriraam Natarajan with The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science at UT Dallas says fear of artificial intelligence often stems from misconceptions about the technology.

Dr. Ray H. Baughman, a pioneer in the field of nanotechnology and a pillar of scientific discovery and innovation at The University of Texas at Dallas for more than 23 years, died April 18 at the age of 82. Baughman was the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Chemistry in the School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and director of the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute at UT Dallas, where his research involved engineering materials and systems at the molecular scale. He was especially known for his work with carbon nanotubes, which are tiny cylindrical structures made from sheets of carbon atoms. A more detailed story about Baughman?s life and his contributions will be published in News Center soon.

Twenty-one outstanding faculty members will be honored today during the Investiture Ceremony at the Edith O?Donnell Arts and Technology Building Lecture Hall.

On April 9 and 10, supporters will join together during Comets Giving Days, a two-day effort to benefit organizations across the University.

A team of researchers has embarked on its own Minecraft mission: to build lessons within the popular game to teach students about semiconductors, batteries, polymers and even help premedical students prepare for the MCAT.

The fabrication method developed by Dr. Mengmeng Zhang and Dr. Ray Baughman makes polymer muscles stretch 97 percent of their original length and have a spring index over 50.

Hello, everyone! We have recently developed a partnership with a UTD organization called Tri Sci Professions. Tri Sci is an organization that seeks to help students on campus seek out career and internship opportunities, and they have a particular interest in helping out anyone with autism or various difficulties! I am very excited to promote this Internship Fair. The whole Fair lasts from 4:00 - 6:30, BUT... at 5:30, Tri Sci plans on ushering most of the visitors out of the room. This is because Tri Sci wants to make this event very accessible to anyone with disabilities, or anyone with autism who struggles in a loud, crowded environment. Tri Sci cares a lot about accommodating these difficulties, and I am ecstatic to show off their intentions and the opportunities they provide. If you struggle with crowded environments, and would still like to attend this event, I recommend showing up at or after 5:30. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! Wondering why we have the stances we do on certain issues? This admin just explained the issues with Autism Speaks and puzzle pieces on a comment thread, so I thought I'd put all the info from there into a single post here. If you have any more questions, ask in the comments! So first off, let me copy and paste this short but great read from an Autistic person (Shalia Martin) who laid out the basic issues with Autism Speaks: "Long story short? They are evil. OK... That's probably not good enough. First dozen reasons or so off the top of my head... there are many more, but hey, this is a start. *They claim to speak for Autistics, yet they refuse to let actual Autistics have any meaningful positions on the board. (They did finally add John Robison, but he has no power and that was after years of Autistic complaining. (This is an old post, he finally quit.))(FAE Admin here: They now have two other Autistics, but like... too little too late) *They perpetuate the tragedy model of Autism. All their fundraising and (I keep thinking propaganda, but that's not the right word for it, my ability to word is failing right now) is "my poor child was stolen by bad evil autism and we must all work together to get him/her out of the lonely world they inhabit" type crap. And that type of speech is SO harmful to actual Autistics, encourages things like bullying, and the devaluation of Autistic life. *A$ spends more money every year on office supplies than they do on actually helping Autistic people here and now. Yes, the vast majority of their money goes to nebulous "research" towards finding a "cure" but they bring in obscene amounts of money. Putting actual grants towards things like helping adult Autistics find employment would be far more useful, but less likely to fill their coffers. *A$ put out several videos demonizing Autism. I am Autism is the most egregious one, but Autism Every Day is terrible too. The words they used would be considered hate speech by EVERYONE if the topic was anything but Autism. One woman in the Autism Every Day video said she would drive her Autistic daughter off the George Washington Bridge, but her "normal" daughter needed her at home. Less than a week later, a mother murdered her Autistic 3 year old. We are not OK with hate speech making us murder targets. *A$ has stated their goal is to find a prenatal test for Autism. Most Autistics object to this because we don't want our population to be killed prenatally. Once they isolated the gene for Downs, for example, the population of Downs kids dropped by over 90%. That's not a "cure" that's eugenics, and we are not OK with that. *A$ is about finding a "cure" not helping overcome issues for already existing Autistics. Most of us like who we are, we just need supports and assistance. A good number of us don't want to be cured. We find being told we're broken offensive. *A$ tends to erase and minimalize anyone's experiences that doesn't fit their mold. They say things like "only high functioning people with few limitations are happy being autistic" even when there are quite a few famous "low functioning" (I hate those labels) Autistics that disagree. Those people they just ignore as though they haven't said anything. *A$ often promotes bad science in their cure propaganda. They've recently been all over the "inflammation causes Autism" stuff, and recently hosted a chat on it, regardless of how sketchy the science actually is. (Read some of Emily Willingham's stuff http://www.emilywillinghamphd.com/ if you don't understand why it's bad science.) *A$ has a tendency to pretend adult Autistics do not exist to keep their propaganda running. No matter the proof put forward that there is no "epidemic" and such, they keep using those terms. *Adding one: They are all about "awareness" with no effort into "action". If anyone is unaware of autism by now, they've been living under a rock for the last 10 years. Awareness does jack diddly to actually help. They are NOT OK with autism ACCEPTANCE, which is what adults want. We want acceptance and support to live in a foreign world, rather than be "fixed". And that's only a few of the reasons. There are tons. Every Autistic I know considers them a hate group, and definitely not a charity that speaks for us." ***From here on out is FAE speaking: On the puzzle piece: The image on the right here is the original usage of the puzzle piece, from an Autism Society of America (I believe San Diego chapter?) flyer from either the 60s or 70s. I used to have the original flyer saved, but can't seem to find it. But the origin of the puzzle piece is this right here. For those who can't see the image, or need help parsing it: It's four jigsaw puzzle pieces interlocking to form the image of a little boy who looks sad. So just from that history, we have weird connotations. The puzzle isn't fun, it's a *puzzle*. Something to be solved. Something that makes people sad. Nowadays there are phrases such as "until every piece fits" which are euphemisms for "until we find a cure" (If you need more info on why we're against cures, please do ask). There are references to Autism being a "puzzling condition" or a "child thing" (like puzzles) and... basically nothing good. My biggest argument, however, is that there are so many AWESOME logos and imagery one can use. The Neurodiversity Narwhal from the Neurodiversity library is adorable, for those who like puzzles because they're cute. Then there are the giraffes that FAE uses; they come from a bit of autistic culture that's, well, hard to briefly explain, but they also have the metaphor of "all giraffes have different spots, but they're all still giraffes, just like all Autistics present differently but we're all still equally Autistic." There's also rainbows as color, and the rainbow infinity/mobious to represent the spectrum of neurodiversity. All of those alternative symbols are great and make people think of inclusivity, not the divisiveness of groups that use the puzzle piece like Autism Speaks. So Autism Speaks is bad in a two-pronged sense. Namely, they're not a very well-run charity, and they have a bad mission. Basically, they'll take your money to pad their pockets and the few things that are productive that they do are harmful. https://thecaffeinatedautistic.wordpress.com/new-autism-speaks-masterpost-updated-62014/ is a great source in general, and I'll be pulling some facts from there. First off, for all they say about how parents of Autistic children need more services, only 3% of their budget (I believe that number is from 2015, but as I recall that percentage hasn't gone up much, if at all) So not only are they not doing much with their huge sponsorships besides making their executives rich, but also, the services they provide aren't always the best to provide. They're huge proponents of ABA, applied behavior analysis. Many survivors of ABA cite it as abusive and traumatic-- and with many places like Autism Speaks recommending 40 hours a week of intensive therapy for small children, how could it not be? I don't have a source on-hand for this, but Autism Speaks did do a lot of lobbying for only ABA to be covered by insurance, throwing out the chance of potentially helpful therapies like occupational therapy for many families. Also yes, people who went through ABA are survivors, because not all Autistic children get to grow up after experiencing it. Either the trauma can drive them to suicide, or there is the unfortunate and unnecessary reality of how many parents murder their children. On that note, Autism Speaks has actually sided with child murder. They had a video, Autism Everyday, where a mother talks about how she was driving in the car with her Autistic daughter, and she almost drove off of a bridge just to kill herself and the child. The reason she didn't? She didn't want to leave her non-Autistic daughter without a mother. Autism Speaks gave this woman a platform, and this woman told this story with her Autistic daughter sitting right next to her. It's incredibly dehumanizing. But that's a lot of what Autism Speaks is. They've called us a Tsunami, an Epidemic, burdens... we're anything but human. They've tried to give themselves better PR lately, because they've realized we hate them. They no longer say they look for a cure... just "Solutions." As in, genetic testing, for one. Genetic testing of fetuses to detect which ones may be Autistic, so we can be "prevented". I believe they called this Autism10K (Aut10K?), for 10,000 genomes sequenced or something. They're basically just bad news, and with so many other great organizations to support, like Autism Women's Network or Autistic Self Advocacy Network, there is zero reason to support them.
