"What's being called one of the most comprehensive groundwater studies ever done in the U.S. was published Wednesday, and, according to the lead scientist, some of its findings are "incredibly alarming."" The UT Arlington team tested 550 water samples collected from public and private water wells in North Texas? Barnett Shale region over the past three years. It found elevated levels of 10 different metals as well as the presence of 19 different chemicals compounds including so-called BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes) compounds associated with hydraulic fracturing. The study also found elevated levels of methanol and ethanol. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Texas Water Science Center, in cooperation with the Texas Natural Resources Information System, embarked on a project to digitize all 38 Geologic Atlas of Texas hardcopy map sheets and compile them into a single, stand-alone database. What resulted was a rich, digital dataset containing more than 145,000 geologic features in Texas and portions of neighboring states. Explore what?s under your feet and across the state!

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $6.5 million in the Ogallala Aquifer region this year to help farmers and ranchers conserve billions of gallons of water and improve water quality. Funding will target seven focus areas in five states, including Texas, to support their primary water source and strengthen rural economies.

Happy Trans-Pecos Thursday to all!! This week?s critter is a reptile unique to this area mainly! The Big Bend Slider is found mostly around the Rio Grande River and inhabits a pretty big area of Mexico as well! On warm sunny days these sliders will crawl up on logs or rocks to receive direct sunlight. Since these guys are ectothermic creatures, (cold blooded) they need the sun to keep them active. Keep an eye out this week for any floating objects, and you might just be lucky enough to see a slider basking in the sunlight!

This past week some of our student members had the volunteer opportunity to help with some low tech erosion prevention/water infiltration projects! The idea of building one rock dams is just one of the many things we can do as wildlife managers to protect the environment. Erosion is a major challenge that every landowner will face at some point. Figuring out ways to slow down water and trap eroding sediment rather than have it pollute bigger watersheds is just one of the ways we can help conserve the resources we have. It?s no secret that the climate in West Texas does not consist of a lot of rain. This makes it even more important for us to take advantage of any rainfall event we get! By slowing down the speed of water we increase the amount of groundwater obtained through soil infiltration. It?s important to have our groundwater supplies recharged whenever a rain event occurs. By ?pumping the brakes? on the water, the soil has a greater opportunity to soak in the water for better soil moisture, vegetation growth, and aquifer recharge. Sul Ross is very thankful to be a part of such an awesome project.

Happy Trans-Pecos Thursday y?all! This week?s cool critter is the canyon bat! These bats are pretty much blind when it comes to sight. But in the case of echolocation they are far from it! Bats are super unique because they are one of the only mammals that can fly. The reason these bats got the name canyon bats is due to their habitat. The most common place you will find these mammals are in canyons and rocky cliffs where they undergo torpor until they go and feed again.

Happy Trans-Pecos Thursday! This week?s critter is the fastest bird in the world! When they dive at prey, they can reach speeds of over 200mph! They are rather easy to identify when it comes to the predatory birds of West Texas. Keep an eye out this week to see these incredible birds!

Good morning Lobos! It?s that time of week again, time for Trans-Pecos Thursday! This week?s is one of my personal favorite! These snakes are know as one of the most venomous in the whole world! When it comes to telling the difference between a Western Diamond Back and a Mojave you have to get very close. (Do not get very close a Mojave Rattlesnake) When looking at the scales in-between the eyes on a Mojave rattlesnake there will be fewer/larger scales. On a western there are many evenly sized smaller scales. The Mojave Rattlesnake?s bite contains a neurotoxic venom that is extremely dangerous if bitten the victim must seek immediate anti venom treatment. While The Western Diamond back possess a dangerous hemotoxic venom that affects the bite victim differently. Long story short, if you happen to cross paths with one of these reptiles observe them from a distance and if caught in close quarters with one, back away slowly.

Good Morning Lobos! Today, we?ve got a plant extremely well adapted to this desert climate/terrain! The Harvard Century Plant is like the king of surviving in the desert! They are very drought tolerant as well as, having spines along their leaf margins to deter anything that might feed on them. These ancient succulents can live up to 40+ years! However, they only produce seed once in their lives. Keep an eye out this week for any of these incredible plants! (Hint: There?s one on main campus!)

It?s our favorite time of the week here at Sul Ross! Trans-Pecos Thursdays!! This week?s unique species is the Colima Warbler. Some of the only places you will find this bird (In Texas) is in big bend and the Chisos Mountains. How lucky are we to live in such a unique location in Texas! Keep an eye out this week to see these awesome birds!

It?s that time of the week! Time for Trans-Pecos Thursday! This weeks creature is a vinegaroon. How does a bug get a name like that you may ask? They get the name from the odor they put off when threatened. This acetic acid has the same ingredients as in vinegar as a result it puts off a foul sour smelling odor. Keep and eye and maybe a nose out this week for these unique bugs!

This week?s Trans Pecos Thursday is the devils walking cane commonly known as Ocotillo! These plants are a type of drought indicator as described in the picture. They will lose leaves when the climate is dry then regrow after a rain! Keep an eye out this week to see these awesome flowering plants!

Congratulations to Drs. Christopher Estepp, Grady Roberts and Hannah Carter for receiving the 2013 E. B. Knight NACTA Journal Award! Their winning article appeared in the March 2012 issue of the NACTA Journal and was titled, ?An Experiential Learning Model of Faculty Development to Improve Teaching. ? Dr. Estepp is one of the newest faculty members in the Sul Ross Animal Science Department specializing in Agricultural Education. Dr. Grady Roberts and Dr. Hannah Carter are faculty members in Agricultural Education and Communication at the University of Florida.

Dr. Estepp and one of the ANRS Reps, Kiddo Campbell, with a group of kindergarten students from Marfa. The students had a great time on their tour of the RAS facilities.

The Big Bend Sierra Club has invited us on a last minute hike tomorrow at 7:30am. The hike will be about 10-12 miles on Burro Mesa and continuing down Apache Canyon. There is a short cut that people can use if they prefer an 8 mile hike. Meet at the railroad parking lot at 7:30 and make sure to bring food and plenty of water. The email mentioned carpooling might be an option. What a great way to start the semester off!

Big news! Kelsey Wogan takes over as the SR Plant Resources Center Environmental Laboratory Manager! The picture below shows us trying, and failing, to be serious as I congratulate her on her new job at my retirement party!

Good News! Sul Ross will have UTV's available on Friday morning to give a ride to and from the plant sale at the greenhouses. There is no close parking due to campus construction, but now you can get to the greenhouse and back without having to make the uphill climb or carry plants back to your car if you come on Friday morning. Yippee!

Sul Ross Plant Resources Center is helping bats!

Because of campus construction, the Fine Arts parking lot on the Sul Ross Alpine campus will be closed for several months. The SRSU greenhouses will be open to sell plants by appointment during this time but there won?t be any parking close to the greenhouses. The other parking areas are open, but the walk will be uphill, so wear comfortable shoes. ?? If you are unable to walk to the greenhouses, email me at klittle@sulross.edu and I can send a plant list and photos of the plants that you are interested in purchasing. I will be happy to schlep all plant purchases to any Sul Ross parking area. SRSU apologizes for any inconvenience cause by construction.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society is proud to announce that Patty Manning will be honored this October at the Native Plant Society of Texas Fall Symposium. Patty is a long time member of the Big Bend Chapter of NPSOT and she and Cyndi Wimberly own and operate a native plant nursery, Twin Sisters Natives, in Alpine, Texas. Patty has encouraging native plant landscaping since her days as a student at Sul Ross State University and, later, as the manager of the SRSU native gardens and greenhouses. She collected, propagated, and sold plants as well as offered education and advice for landscaping with native plants. She was, and continues to be, a driving force for using Trans Pecos natives in gardens throughout the Big Bend. She is being honored with the Shirley Lusk Memorial Award for her work collecting herbarium specimens for preservation and documentation of the native plants of Texas. Below is the announcement by the Native Plant Society of Texas: The Shirley Lusk Memorial Award honors a community scientist for collecting and preserving Texas native plants for public education by providing outstanding contribution of herbarium vouchers. Patty Manning has been collecting herbarium specimens during her tenure at Sul Ross State University and continues to collect and document the flora of Texas now that she is retired from the university. She has added valuable data to our knowledge, including the collection and documentation of plants that were previously unknown in Texas.

Wednesday, May 3, is the last day of tutoring for the spring semester. If you need a tutor to review an essay or help you with a math equation, you need to get to the Academic Learning Center today or tomorrow.

Lobos! Tutoring ends for the Fall 2016 semester this Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 9:00 p.m. Good luck on your final exams. We will reopen once the Spring 2017 semester begins.

Now is the time to start thinking about finals. Come visit with one of our tutors as you start studying for finals. We have tutors available Monday-Thusday from noon until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday from noon until 5:00. We will close for Thanksgiving at noon.

The last day of tutoring at the Academic Learning Center will be Wednesday, May 4. God luck with your final exams.

Finals are just around the corner. Now is a great time to visit with the tutors and make sure that you're ready!

The Academic Learning Center (ALC) will open for business on Monday, September 14. We will offer tutoring primarily in writing and math. Our tutors will supplement in other areas as their skill sets allow. When you come to the ALC, be sure to bring your class materials, the assignment sheet, and all of your notes that pertain to the subject you're working on. We look forward to working with you.

Did you see this news??? Texas A&M will limit undergraduate enrollment growth for the next 5-7 years and implement several changes aimed at ?right-sizing? campus, President Mark A. Welsh III announced on January 23, 2025. The enrollment growth pause will limit new undergraduate enrollments at the main campus to 15,000 annually ? 11,750 freshmen and 3,250 transfer students. Can you imagine being ONE of 15,000 new students on a campus? Can you imagine being one of 11,750 brand new high school graduates learning all the "newness" of the college experience? On February 27 and 28, the Hector Herrera family, owners of Herrgon Maintenance Co. of Wimberley, TX, donated their expertise, tools and time to prune the pecan trees at the SRSU Turner Range Animal Science complex. In the process, Mr. Herrara talked to students from multiple classes, including Dr. Frank's, Dr. Warnock's, Dr. Luna's and Dr. Igo's, explaining the need for, the purposes behind and the methods used in tree pruning and maintenance. Additionally, Mr. Herrera was kind and patient with Dr. Igo, allowing him to watch, help and learn. We are very much indebted to the Herreras for providing this incredible service benefiting the trees, the students and the faculty at Sul Ross. We are really excited to watch these trees leaf out and return to full health over the next few months.

The Wednesday focus of National FFA Week is on Ag Teacher/FFA Adviser appreciation. If there is an ag teacher you appreciate, whether you had the person as a teacher, your kids/grandkids had the person as a teacher, or the person is a friend, community member, colleague, etc., drop their name here. Good afternoon, Sul Ross! This week?s Trans-Pecos Thursday is for all you entomologist out there! The Large Creosote Gall Midge is found all across the western United States! They inhabit most of the creosote flats found around our campus in Alpine. Keep a lookout this week to maybe spot one of these cool finds!

This week?s Trans Pecos Thursday is a spiny one! The White column Foxtail Cactus has adapted to the desert conditions greatly! They grow in some of the harshest conditions where the average rainfall is less than 20 inches a year! Keep an eye out this week to maybe spot these beautiful plants!

Texas Chapter 2025. Extremely proud of The Sul Ross Range & Wildlife Club for all of the awards received at this year?s Texas Chapter. These students worked countless hours to practice and ensure they were prepared for the competitions. The Sul Ross plant ID team placed 3rd out of 13 different universities! As well as, Syndilyn Maguglin, who placed first in the undergraduate poster contest. Proud is an understatement for the word to describe how we feel to be a part of such an awesome group of people.

Good Morning! It?s a great day to be a Sul Ross Lobo! What?s also great about today is it?s our Trans Pecos Thursday! This weeks creepy crawler is the Chiricahua Gray Tarantula! These might scare those who have arachnophobia but there?s no reason to be scared! These guys are just as afraid of you as you are of them. They feed on mainly your small insects that you might find in different plant communities. Although they are not as active in these colder months keep an eye out on these warm days to maybe spot one of these awesome spiders!

It?s another beautiful Trans-Pecos Thursday here in Alpine Texas! We hope the semester is going great for everyone so far! This week?s cool critter is our very own Rio Grande Beaver! You wouldn?t think these mammals would be suited for the desert conditions, but where there?s flowing rivers you can sometimes find beavers! Beavers were one of the main attractions for early settlers when it came to the fur trade. Beavers were known for having exceptionally warm, durable, and above all luxurious textured hide. As a result, this made them a very sought after species. The species as a whole suffered from over-trapping after the early settlers discovered all their useful qualities. Luckily beaver trapping has slowed down and in most cases the populations are stable again. Beavers are nocturnal so you most likely won?t see one during the day, but keep an eye out around water this week to maybe catch a glimpse of these hard working critters!
