The PLU Choir of the West ends our 2023-2024 performance season next week, with two performances of Johannes Brahms' sublime Ein Deutsches Requiem, with the piano transcription for two pianist penned by the composer. We're joined by the exceptional Amy Boers and Oksana Ejokina at the piano. Performances are Sunday, April 21, 7:30pm, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Seattle, and Tuesday, April 23, 7:30pm, in Lagerquist Concert Hall at Pacific Lutheran University. Next week is concert week for PLU Choirs, and we are excited to present our Fall Choral Concerts on Tuesday (Oct 18) and Wednesday (Oct 19), 7:30pm PDT in Lagerquist Concert Hall. Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Ian Rice, Tenor "I've loved being a part of COW! As a Global Studies and Hispanic Studies double major, I'm so thankful to have kept music a priority and daily activity in my life at PLU. I was very excited to join COW for my senior year. Being in this community of warm-hearted people and talented musicians was incredibly meaningful. My favorite moment with COW was going on our J-term tour, especially the concert at St. Paul Lutheran church in Denver, because we grew so much as a choir and developed a very full and beautiful sound. My future plans are obviously uncertain, but I'm interested in pursuing a nonprofit career, traveling, and singing in a community choir!" Congratulations, and thanks Ian!

Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Ethan Moon, Bass Ethan has been a member of the Choir of the West for four years as a bass, and he has served as one of our bass section leaders this year. Ethan has performed many solos with the choir, including at this year's Christmas concerts, on our J-term tour, and on the album "There Will Come Soft Rains." Of his time in the Choir, his favorite memory is singing Evensong in Kings College Chapel in Cambridge, England during last year's international tour. Ethan is a senior Music Education major with an emphasis is secondary choral music. He plans to student teach at Puyallup High School in the fall. Congratulations, Ethan - and thank you!

Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Rachel Bridges, Alto Rachel has been a member of the choir for four years, and has served as choir president this year. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Of her time in choir, Rachel says: "Although there are countless wonderful memories to choose from, my favorite time in Choir each year is getting to hear the first sound we make in Lagerquist Hall during our first rehearsal as a choir. Something about it just makes me feel like I?m returning home. This summer I will begin working at Good Samaritan Hospital as a nurse on the Med/Surg Oncology floor. I would like to detail my day. I knew that I wanted to get Berlin Philharmonic tickets for my class. I also knew that my only opportunity was Kiril Patrenko?s first concert of the year. I also knew it was Mendelssohn?s Elijah with choir. It felt as though this would be popular and I was right. I set my alarm for 2am, the minute they became available. By the time I got to my computer, they were already almost sold out!!!! The website crashed several times while I was trying. And they would only let me buy 4 at a time. I GOT THE TICKETS all 22 for my class. This is huge. Oh, I also had a concert today too. We did great.

DACA is back! New applications are being accepted for the first time since September 2017 allowing undocumented students to be shielded from deportation and qualify for work authorization amongst other benefits. In the past, because of our community, PLU was able to fund all DACA applications for undocumented students at PLU while also ensuring they had access to course materials and emergency funds. Telef?rico & Presidential Palace. Today some students had plans with their families and I am sure they had a great time! Others decided to go these two places with me today. We had fun, learned about the President and the history of the Presidential Palace. We walked a lot too! Tomorrow classes start and students will choose the institutions at which they will be doing their service learning. There will probably be no pictures until our next field trip next weekend.

PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY - The Washington Sea Grant Community Engaged Intern will work with the WSG Coastal Resilience Team and the Hazards Analysis and Resilience Planning Team at Washington State Emergency Management Division in supporting community-prioritized resilience efforts in coastal Washington. Are you a PLU Pep Band alumni? Then you should come and play with us at the 2024 homecoming football game on Oct. 5th! There's no need to come to a rehearsal or to bring music, just bring yourself and your instrument to Sparks Stadium in Puyallup at 12:30 and be ready to play. With our first rehearsal approaching this Friday (Sept. 13th), we'd like to get our schedule out on our Instagram. Dr. Gerhardstein (Dr. G) is our wonderfully fabulously terrific and immensely amazing faculty advisor! Biology major Lydia Flaspholer '25 is part of PLU's inaugural women's lacrosse varsity team. ?I really struggled to find community my first semester at PLU and I was really missing playing lacrosse and the team environment that comes with it,? Flaspohler says. ?I joined the team and even though we only had one scrimmage that season and a few practices a week, I would 100% say joining the team was the reason I stayed here at PLU.? ????

SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY - Applications for the University of Washington Molecular Engineering Materials Center (UW MEM-C) Summer 2025 REU program are open, and the submission deadline is Feb 15th! Students accepted to the program will be embedded in one of the UW MEM-C labs for 9 weeks. They will work with a graduate student and faculty member to develop a research project, gain training in relevant techniques and instrumentation, collect data and finally produce a poster and research abstract. With Sunday's race at the Head of the Lake Regatta concluding our 2017 fall season for PLU Men's Rowing, we look take breath and reflect back on all that we as team have achieved this year. What a season it has been with the new additions to our team as well as the welcome returners form the 2016 season, showing just how much we have accomplished since we 'revitalized' the team in 2016. This season not only proved how far we have come with all we have achieved most notably having 3 rowers making the 6K record board in one day ??, but also proved that we have so much more left to achieve as we grow as rowers (and coxswains ??), and together as a team. We look forward to seeing everyone next Spring season, and eagerly welcome anyone else wanting to join in and see what rowing at PLU has to offer. Thanks for the awesome season everyone!??

PLU Men's Rowing returned to compete at WIRA after a 2-year absence. Before each row: sunscreen. After each row: recovery with legs in the cool waters of Lake Natoma. We learned a lot about what will be required to compete at a high level over the next few years. Overall, it was a great experience for our young team and we look forward to being back next year with a larger contingent and competing with the best in the West.

MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM - The Advanced Materials Analysis and Characterization (AMAC) program is a 15-month long curriculum combining two quarters of intensive on-campus coursework with an internship component, culminating in a Master of Science degree in chemistry. This program provides graduate students with the analytical skills they will need for careers in industrial research laboratories and other technology companies.

MASTER'S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - The Master?s Internship Program in Electrochemistry - University of Oregon consists of 6-months of accelerated coursework (including foundational theory, and team-based applied laboratory work) and professional development (leadership, project management, interview skills, team integration) coupled with a 9-month paid internship in industry or national laboratory (average annualized compensation to date is ~$80,000, with all students landing internships). Application deadline is February 15, 2025.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY - The Renewable Energy Scholarship Foundation expects to award eighteen or more scholarships in 2025. For those in the Portland and Salem area, we are delighted to announce performances offered during our 2023 Choir of the West Spring Tour: we'll be at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Portland on Thursday, April 20 (7:30pm); and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem on Friday, April 21 (7:30pm). We'll also perform a Tour Homecoming Concert on Tuesday, April 25 (7:30pm) in Lagerquist Concert Hall, and that performance will be live streamed. Works include exquisite Psalm settings by Johannes Brahms and Caroline Shaw, significant contemporary works for choir and piano by Jake Runestad and JAC Redford, and two works written during--and in response to--the pandemic by Jennifer Lucy Cook and Ken Burton. We'll be joined in performance by collaborative pianist Amy Boers. Hope to see you there!

Hi Friends! I am so excited to share a new piece with you - "In Profundum Maris." This was composed for Choir of the West back in 2019 and we were working on it when COVID hit - so it was never performed. The students wanted to record the piece in virtual choir format, and at long last here it is! This was right at the beginning of virtual choir development, so we didn't really know what we were doing, and the videos weren't usable. But Envision Studios has done an excellent job of editing together the audio, and we used the score along with some stock video to create the performance. I'm very proud to announce the virtual choir premiere of "Prayer of Hope," a work I composed for PLU's University Singers after our spring semester was interrupted by the COVID-19 crisis. We never were able to rehearse the piece as an ensemble - the singers learned their parts on their own, and after some brief coaching on Zoom, they filmed their individual performances at home with their phones. I put together the audio with Audacity and the video with iMovie. It was quite a long process, but I learned a lot and am much better prepared for the next time I do one of these projects! Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Caroline Goodwin, Soprano This is Caroline's first year as a member of the Choir of the West. She will be graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition with an emphasis in Vocal Performance and Audio Production. Caroline says: "My favorite moment in choir was when COW was on tour in Boulder, Colorado. We were rehearsing before a concert and everyone began singing Lux from our Christmas concert series, filling the whole worship space at St.Paul with an angelic presence and sound~ the spontaneous nature of it and the emotion was very profound!" Congratulations, Caroline - and thank you!

Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Cat Tyler, Alto Cat is a four-year member of Choir of the West. She will be graduating with a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree with a minor in Dance. Of her time in the Choir, Cat says, "I have enjoyed many moments and it is almost impossible to pick a favorite, but choir has always been important to me! I am very grateful to COW and everything it has taught me." After graduation Cat will be moving to Georgia. She plans to pursue a masters degree in education, and will begin looking at options to combine her skills and love of horses with music. Congratulations, Cat - and thank you!

Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Chase Alm, Tenor Chase Alm has been a member of the Choir of the West for two years as a tenor, and he served as the section leader this year. His favorite memory was singing in King?s College Chapel in England and being able to share that beautiful space with his fellow choir members. Chase is working on his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in secondary choral music. Moving forward, he plans to student teach in the fall and continue working as a choral scholar at a local church. When the pandemic is over, he vows to never make a virtual choir ever again, along with the rest of the people who are making virtual choirs. Congratulations Chase, and thanks!

Choir of the West Senior 2020 Tribute Rachel Bridges, Alto Rachel has been a member of the choir for four years, and has served as choir president this year. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Of her time in choir, Rachel says: "Although there are countless wonderful memories to choose from, my favorite time in Choir each year is getting to hear the first sound we make in Lagerquist Hall during our first rehearsal as a choir. Something about it just makes me feel like I?m returning home. This summer I will begin working at Good Samaritan Hospital as a nurse on the Med/Surg Oncology floor. The event will be held in UC Room 133 on Wednesday, April 20th, at 6 p.m. Laurie and Sue, our guest speakers, are CPAs, sisters, and alumna of the PLU School of Business. Laurie is currently the managing director of tax at Alaska Airlines. Sue has served in a variety of positions, including VP of Accounting and Finance at REI and controller at T-Mobile. There will be time for Q&A at the event. Catered dessert will be served. All students are welcome. See you there!
