With 5 schools, a college, 34 departments, and 44 undergraduate degrees, MIT has plenty to offer the university student. The schools include Engineering, Science, Sloan School of Management, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and Architecture and Urban Planning (which was the first of its kind in the U.S.). The college is known as the Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology.

The top five majors at MIT are Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, General, Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical/Space Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. All undergraduates have to complete the core curriculum, also known as GIRs. They include classes in science, laboratory, humanities/arts/social sciences, and communication. Every student will be asked to complete a swimming test and non-varsity athletes are required to take four quarters of P.E.

MIT conducts its classes and homework much like the real world, with a focus on collaboration. Often times, students are encouraged to work with each other on homework as it is unlikely they will be able to complete it on their own.
