Amherst College has an open curriculum plan, which means there are no general education requirements for students. This results in the chance for freshman to take advanced courses, and upperclassmen to take introductory classes. Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, General, English Language and Literature, General, Political Science and Government, and General are the most popular majors at the college, but students are also free to design their own major.

Every year, 850 courses are offered at Amherst within 38 majors. Many students choose to double major thanks to the freedom of open curriculum. Each works closely with academic advisers to choose the best path for their time at the college.

Amherst is also part of the Five College Consortium, which is a school system consisting of one university and four colleges, all within 10 miles. This allows the students to take part in any of the 6,000 courses offered at any of the five schools as well as ten museums and libraries with over 11 million items. Students are permitted to take up to half of their courses at the other schools and are encouraged to use the free bus system that connects the entire consortium.
